What an emotional night, I'm still seeing black & white scarves waving through the air this morning. Alan Shearer walked on to his beloved park for the final time last night to take the acclaim of the Geordie nation. The 35-year-old could do little else than kick-off his testimonial game against Celtic because of the knee injury which ended his career three weeks early. But that had little bearing on the reception he received as a decade of loyal service draws to a close. Shearer's 10 years at St James' Park have brought him 206 goals, countless records, inestimable fame and fortune, and a place in Tyneside folklore. The fact that they have not also yielded a single winner's medal is a disappointment, but the knowledge that he has spent the better part of his professional career doing what he loves in front of thousands of devoted worshippers is reward enough.
